Keep a betting passbook: every rupee in and out, ten minutes a week

The betting balance hides what the month really cost. A simple passbook of deposits, requested and received withdrawals and bonus terms shows the honest figure.

Betting apps show you a balance, a list of recent bets and, sometimes, a banner celebrating a win. None of them shows the figure that matters: how much money has left your bank this month and how much has come back. A betting passbook is a simple record you keep yourself, and ten minutes a week is enough to keep it honest.

Why the balance on the screen misleads

The balance on a betting site mixes three different kinds of money: cash you deposited, winnings from that cash, and bonus money that is not yet yours. It also forgets everything you have already withdrawn or lost. A balance of ₹1,800 can follow a month in which ₹3,000 left your account.

Memory is worse. Wins are remembered by the round, losses by the vague total. Bank statements are accurate but scattered across apps and days. A passbook puts it all on one page.

The columns of a betting passbook

Use a notebook, a notes app or a spreadsheet. Keep one line for every movement of money between your bank and any betting site.

  • Date of the transaction.
  • Site, if you use more than one.
  • In: deposits from your bank, with the UPI app and the 12-digit UTR.
  • Out requested: withdrawals you asked for, with the date of the request.
  • Out received: the date and amount that actually reached your bank account.
  • Bonus: bonus credited, with its wagering requirement written next to it.
  • Running net: total received minus total deposited, so far this month.

Only the "In" and "Out received" columns change the running net. Everything else is information, not money.

A sample month in rupees

Here is a modest month for a player who deposits by UPI and withdraws by IMPS.

DateEntryAmountRunning net
3 OctDeposit, UPI₹1,000 in−₹1,000
9 OctDeposit, UPI₹500 in−₹1,500
12 OctWithdrawal requested₹1,200−₹1,500
14 OctWithdrawal received, IMPS₹1,200 out−₹300
20 OctDeposit, UPI₹1,000 in−₹1,300

On 12 October the betting balance looked like a win. The passbook did not move until the IMPS transfer actually landed two days later, and by the 20th the month was ₹1,300 down. That figure, not the balance, is the one to compare with your monthly limit.

Bonus money: a separate column, always

A bonus is a credit with conditions attached, not cash. Most come with a wagering requirement: the bonus amount multiplied by a set figure is the total you must bet before a rupee of it can be cashed out. With a common x20 requirement, a ₹1,000 bonus needs ₹20,000 of bets.

Writing that ₹20,000 next to the bonus line keeps it in proportion. To clear it you would have to bet twenty times the bonus, and every one of those bets carries the house edge. Many bonuses also cap what you may withdraw from them, expire after a few days, or count only on certain games. Note those conditions in the same line, copied from the bonus terms, so you are not working from memory.

Never add a bonus to the running net. If the wagering is completed and money reaches your bank, it shows up in "Out received" like any other withdrawal.

Requested is not received

A withdrawal request is a promise from the operator, and the T&C decide how long it may take. Some allow several days, longer if identity checks start. Until the amount appears in your bank statement, it stays in the "Out requested" column only.

Keeping requested and received apart shows you two useful things. First, how long payouts really take from that site, compared with what its rules say. Second, whether you have a habit of cancelling withdrawals or betting the pending amount again, which is one of the clearest signs that betting is starting to steer you.

The weekly ten-minute review

Pick a fixed day, Sunday evening for example, and do the same four things:

  1. Open your bank statement and UPI history for the week and add any payment you forgot to write down.
  2. Check that every withdrawal you marked as received is really in the bank.
  3. Read the running net for the month and compare it with your limit.
  4. Decide, in writing, the limit for next week.

If the review keeps showing deposits you did not plan, or you find yourself avoiding it, treat that as information. Tele-MANAS on 14416 or 1-800-891-4416 is a free government helpline, open 24/7, and gambling worries are a normal reason to call.

Records for later

A passbook with dates, amounts and UTRs answers questions fast: from your bank about a reversed transfer, from support about a missing deposit, or from an adviser if you ever need one. None of this is legal advice; which rules apply to you is worth checking before you play.

It will also show you, line by line and in your own handwriting, what betting has cost you. For most people that is the most useful number they never had.
